Torre campanaria Scaligera

In seguito, furono collocati i quattro quadranti dell’orologio.

Ruins of the

Scaligeri bell Tower

14th CENTURY - COLLAPSED IN 1977

The construction of this tower was commissioned by the Scaligeri, lords of Verona, in the construction of the Serraglio fortified line.

This long and complex work involved the construction of a crenellated wall of almost 12 km, interspersed with little towers and protected by a moat, an average 12 meters wide and three deep.

In the Prabiano place, the passive defences were joined by the waters of the river Tione.

The structure connected the castles of Borghetto, Valeggio, Gherla, and Villafranca.

The wall should also have reached the Nogarole Rocca Castle, but the tragic Black Plague of 1348 compromised the completion of the works.

This wall surrounded also the south-east part of Valeggio, where the only access to the town could be found: a door with a drawbridge positioned on the main arterial road of the time, which connected the town with the track of the consular roman road Via Postumia.

Next to the driveway entrance, our tower was erected which, in its dimensions and features, recalls the typical style of the Scaligeri keeps, such as those of Valeggio, Sirmione and Lazise.

At the beginning of the XVII century, when its military function decayed, the tower was transformed into a bell tower since it rose next to the parish church of Saint Peter in Cathedra.

In 1886, the structure was raised several meters with a crenellated bell tower, new windows were opened and four large dials of the clock were placed on the sides.

In 1964, the last four bells were added and the bells concert was automated. In 1976, the terrible earthquake that struck the Friuli, made its effects felt up to our territory where it also made the old tower shake and the bells rang.

A few months later, at 9:20 am on January 21st, 1977, structure collapsed on itself, causing no fatalities, damaging only the nearby church.

Today, around the ruins stands an elegant semi-circular steel structure, donated by the Cordioli&C. company on the 30th anniversary of the collapse (21.01.2007), that show to the people the historic nine bells.

Scaliger

Glockenturm

14. Jhr. - eingestürzt 1977

Mittelalterliche Route
